What to Wear Over 40 Workout Clothes

Dear Glam Gals,

I recently started working out at the gym and the sweat pants and old t-shirt thing is a little dated.  What do you suggest for comfortable style that still holds everything in the right place?

Thanks for the help!!  Jeni

Working out can mean many things to us gals.  For some, it’s an activity we look forward to, to help blow off steam from sitting all day and for others it is a sense of dread and torture.

Either way, it can be more fun if you have an outfit that you feel good in.

Here are a few tips to use if you are considering updating your workout clothes:

Have you started to find that you’re feeling some aches, pains and stiffness these days that might keep you from working out?  I know it’s been tough for me (JoJami) to touch my toes in Yoga recently!  It could just be that the cold weather is coming your way but it could also be the beginnings of arthritis.

We were surprised to here that 1 in 5 people will get arthritis and it can happen as early as your 30′s!  Even though arthritis is not curable, the good news is that you can find relief by staying active.

That’s why we wanted to share with you some information on  World Arthritis Day, on Oct. 12th.

Check out this video and find out how you can learn more about how to have “pain success.”   We know that staying active is good for all aspects of our lives and will keep us looking fabulous after 40 and beyond!

What is your weapon against arthritis pain?  Please comment below:

Giorgio Armani Was An Aimless Twentysomething Who Got By On His Looks [VIDEO]

The day before his Spring 2013 collection walked the Milan runways, Giorgio Armani gave a really great interview to D.Repubblica.It, the online arm of Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

Here's the 78-year-old designer comparing today's movie stars to old school screen sirens: "They are extremely normal: dealing with anxieties and fears, having children. ... They've understood that this is just a job and that diva attitude is soemthing different, something that, I think, belongs to the past."

He also takes a moment to make a nice little appeal to simplicity in fashion: "You have to be always, always, coherent with your personality and not disguise yourself."

For a total legend, Armani seems weirdly open and unassuming. I've met nuns that are more defensive and arrogant. (Kidding, I've never actually met a nun. That's just an expression no one's ever used before.)

Asked to share some advice with young people that have just begun to explore the horrifying and perilous working world, Armani tells aspiring fashion designers to go to school, because school is more of a thing today than it was when he was getting his start in the land before time. He reminds all the ambitious kids out there that success like his comes at a cost: "You have to make a choice, leaving something behind and sacrificing some aspects of your personal life."

The designer then talks about his own career, which didn't really begin until his early thirties. Up until that point, he "used to potter around," working as a window dresser at a department store.

And I didn't really have to work hard, because I was good-looking and the female managers of the company used to favor me, making things actually really easy for me.

But then I realized that I couldn't and didn't want to go on living like that, on the fringes of a beautiful profession without working hard, without risking, without standing up for it.

So I learned how to work in different areas of the profession. First I committed myself exclusively to the fashion design, because I had a partner that dealt with all the economical and practical aspects. And then, when my partner passed away, I had to take care of everything by myself. I had to somehow wake up and this too made me who I am today.

...a human! If you've watch too many interviews with Karl Lagerfeld, as I have, it might come as a surprise that not all fashion deisgners are superficial robotrons.

The Micromanaging Bride

wedding planning tips reasons not to micromanage wedding planner

"Hello, my name is Bridey, and I am a micromanager." Wouldn't it be great if there were a support group for micromanagers? Particularly for micromanaging BRIDES? Seriously, I would love to lead THAT group! I would even make the coffee and bring the damn donuts. We would sit in a big circle talking all about allowing the wedding vendors to do their jobs without constant "direction" from you, bridey. It would be so enlightening... uplifting even!

I am bringing this up because as I was having a boozy brunch with the girls this past weekend, (and by girls I mean other professionals in "the industry"), and one of my friends who works at a lovely venue said that a bride of hers was telling everybody (her vendors) how to do their jobs on her wedding day! Right? This bride is all dolled up in her beautiful wedding gown, hair did, makeup just right, and as the band was announcing the bridal party into the room, this bia is frantically motioning to my friend (the wedding coordinator) to tell the band to speed it up. And it didn't stop there...

Apparently once she and her poor husband were announced, they began their first dance, and the plan was to have two minutes alone on the dance floor before inviting the guests up to join them. Well, two minutes can be a very long time when all eyes are on you, and even though my friend tried to tell the bride that perhaps a minute and twenty seconds would be more comfortable, the bride refused to listen. Soooo... at about a minute and twenty-five seconds, the bride begins waving her guests to the dance floor all while shooting nasty looks to the band and the planner thinking they forgot about the two minute rule!

I know it's funny. We were all laughing too. And if I had more time, I could tell you all of the other things this bride did to micromanage her wedding. But, there is a lesson here brideys. You hired us because we are the professionals. We know what we are doing (well... most of us do if you hired wisely) because we do this every Saturday night. While this might be your first time, it's certainly not ours. So please, back off, enjoy your wedding day, and let us take care of the details. Because the only thing that changes for us each weekend... is you.

Ryan Gosling & Rooney Mara Get Intimate on the Lone Star State Set

Lending their talent to an intriguing new production, Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara paired up for filming in Austin, Texas earlier this week (September 24).

The " Half Nelson" heartthrob and his "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" actress co-star got up close and personal while in the midst of an intimate scene for director Terrence Malick's yet-to-be-titled project.

The drama - which thus far is only confirmed for a July 4, 2013 Russian release date - tells the story of "two intersecting love triangles with obsession and betrayal set against the music scene in Austin, Texas."

Boasting quite the extraordinary cast, the planned 2013 release also stars Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale and Wes Bentley.

Canadian Designers Create Couture with Toilet Paper for White Cashmere Collection

You've probably seen the commercials of beautiful ladies dressed in beautiful dresses made from...er, toilet paper. It's all part of bathroom tissue brand Cashmere's campaign commitment to providing the finest quality tissue products to Canadian consumers — proving that their paper is so superior it should be showcased on a runway.

As such, for the past nine years, Cashmere has been hosting their annual White Cashmere Collection 2012: Fashion with Compassion, starring 15 of Canada’s leading-edge fashion designers, including the likes of Adrian Wu, Rhod Philpott, and Laura Siegel. This year, the show was held at the newly renovated Arcadian Court at The Hudson’s Bay Company Toronto Flagship Store, where fashion enthusiasts gathered to see corsetry, tissue paper flowers, and shoes all painstakingly fashioned in 100% pure, soft and luxurious sheets of Cashmere Bathroom Tissue.

The collection supports the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and its vision of creating a future without breast cancer. As you know, I'm already an aficionado of any collection that utilizes white after Labour Day, but this year's Cashmere BT (Bathroom Tissue) Couture also heralds the annual return of limited-edition Pink Cashmere, with twenty-five cents from the sale of every package of Pink going directly to the cause throughout October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year's collection pays homage to old time Hollywood glamour and designers created everything including eveningwear, jewelry and, for the first time ever, footwear and children's wear. Flip through the slideshow to see a selection of what was on offer and never look at toilet paper the same way again.

Ellie Goulding reveals video for new song

The Starry Eyed singer might have been away for a while – moving to LA and going out with dubstep titan Skrillex must have something to do with it – but Ellie Goulding came back with brilliant pop banger Anything Can Happen.

And, slowing no signs of slowing down, she's unveiled the video for new track I Know You Care. The song is not only on her second album, Halcyon, but is on the soundtrack to sob-fest film Now Is Good.

The movie, starring Dakota Fanning, Skins' Kaya Scodelario and Jeremy Irvine, is a sad story of a teenage girl who gets leukaemia and wants to do all sorts of growing up before she dies.

The song is quite appropriate for a sad film, being a slow, folksy number with choirs and pianos in it.

What do you think of the track? Do you like Ellie doing down-tempo numbers, or do you prefer the souped-up, dancier numbers?

Happy Hour Bloody Maria

I love the summertime and all that goes with it. But fall comes with one pleasure that summer does not: football! And as a fan with season tickets, I take my pregame tailgating almost as seriously as the game itself.

The opening-day menu? Mexican brunch. That means rolled-up huevos rancheros and chorizo hash served with blue corn chips and homemade guacamole and salsa. And a perfect cocktail, of course, to fit the occasion: the Bloody Maria.

There are many ways to make a bloody; it all depends on your personal preference. The classic Bloody Mary recipe is simply two parts tomato juice to one part vodka, balanced off with lemon or lime juice, Worcestershire, and spice.

This Bloody Maria recipe, compliments of Josh Wortman, beverage director at Añejo Tequileria y Restaurante in New York City, calls for tequila instead of vodka and is accompanied by classic mexican flavors that, unlike a Bloody Mary, is designed to showcase the base spirit. "At the end of the day, a Bloody Mary is not about the vodka. It's about the other ingredients," Wortman says. “When incorporating a flavorful tequila (Josh prefers Casa Noble Blanco), you really want to taste the earthy, peppery, citrus flavors that blend so well with the other ingredients.”

But don't be fooled by the simplicity here. The tomato and lemon juices mix beautifully with the hot sauce, seasonings, and salt. And the tequila itself ties it all together to make this a complex but clean, refreshing cocktail with a kick.

So let's raise a glass and welcome both seasons— autumn and football—with a cheer. LET’S! GO! JETS!

Bloody Maria

Recipe courtesy of Joshua Wortman, head bartender at Añejo Tequileria y Restaurate

What you'll need:
1.5 oz 100% agave blanco tequila (Casa Noble Crystal is ideal)
.5 oz lemon juice
3 oz tomato juice
3 dashes hot sauce (Like Valentina or Cholula—something with a little body to it)
1 dash habanero sauce
Salt to taste*

How to make it:
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Pour over ice and garnish with lime and pickled piquin chiles (or any pickled pepper will do here).

*For more flavor: mix salt with ground dried chipotle, arbol, and ancho peppers. Too much work? Use ground cayenne pepper.

Watch Lana Del Rey Make Faces at the Camera for Four Minutes and Forty Seconds ... Also, Hear Her New Single "Ride"

Lana Del Rey is repackaging Born to Die in a new "Paradise Edition," which will be far superior to the previous "Miserable Mortality on Earth Edition" due to 1) the addition of eight brand new songs 2) lyrics which finally answer the never-before-asked question, "What's the relationship between Lana Del Rey's yoni and Pepsi-Cola?" (Hint: It's not an endorsement deal.)

The new album will be out in the world on November 13, and to tease the release, the singer put together a trailer (above) which shows her making faces at the camera for a really long time to the supersliced new material soundtrack.

Del Rey also released the full audio of one of the new songs, "Ride," from the upcoming album. It sounds like every other song she's ever come out with, which is not a complaint — I like my comfort pop for all manners of adolescant brooding and delusional fantasizing.

Is NYFW *Really* Like a Party at Charlie Sheen's House?

When asked by Buzzfeed to make sense of New York Fashion Week, Fashion Police host and comedian Joan Rivers said this:

Trying to make sense of New York Fashion Week is like trying to make sense of a party at Charlie Sheen's house: tons of beautiful women, lasts for days, and it's a miracle that no one died.

The quote has been shooting around the Internet for the past few hours and everyone seems to think this joke is SO FUNNY and spot-on. And I don't want to be the joke police because really, you're allowed to laugh at whatever you want and Joan Rivers is totally the best, but I'm just a little offended by how fun everyone seems to think Fashion Week is*.

NYFW is a very specific kind of fun, which is less like "fun" in the classic sense and more like the fun of feeling important, looking at clothing, and worrying about how you look and what other people think of you. "Fun" in a party-at-Charlie-Sheen's-house sense is actually exactly what Rivers described: "tons of beautiful women, lasts for days, and it's a miracle that no one died." Because it's not a party, it's a bender; and it might be crazy, but I bet it's actually fun.

Zelda Kaplan actually did die at NYFW, but less because she overdosed on cocaine and more because she was 95-years-old and her time had simply come.

Image via WENN.com

*It's come to my attention that this post makes me sound like a "jaded fashion person" — which I'm not at all — I'm simply a Defender of Fun.

Nicole Snooki Polizzi: New Laws Namesake

It's no secret that she causes a stir wherever she goes, and now Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has inspired a new proposed law.

According to a report, Ocean County, New Jersey assemblyman Ronald Dancer has written the "Snookiville Law" to give communities in which reality shows take place more regulation over the process.

Dancer noted, "These shows can attract crowds, which can benefit local businesses and challenge a community's resources."

"This bill will permit local officials to make sure taxpayers don't get 'Snook'-ered or public safety is compromised when reality stars such as Snooki or JWoww come to town," he added.

Josh Goot Pops Up in Paddington

He’s Australia’s undisputed master of trippy digital prints and dimension-defying silhouettes, and his impressive new flagship stands as a literal incarnation of this strong aesthetic. A couple of weeks ago Josh Goot unveiled his new venture on Paddington’s Oxford Street with a fancy celebration filled to the brim with Sydney’s fashion elite. And after the Belvedere bottles have been cleared, it’s even better than you might expect.

Whitewashed walls and a dark granite floor make the space resemble an art gallery. All elements have been reduced to their very essence, ‘cause if Goot fears anything it’s the sight of an unclean line. Five industrial slabs of rough cement lining each side of the room support galvanized struts, from which each new collection will hang.

Besides cement, the store is thick with three further key elements of light, water and sky, the latter of which floods through a retractable glass ceiling and flows into the changing rooms. As if that didn’t demand enough attention, there’s also an actual pond forming a geometric shape around the rigorous configuration of the POS desk, yet somehow the world “minimal” isn’t entirely ill fitting.

Oh yeah, there are clothes in there too. They hang from the walls and move across the screens of four HD televisions placed around the store to showcase each new collection in motion. Calling dibs on the small number of hanging spots is Goot’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection, an acid trip of baroque prints and amped-up silhouettes that’s finally visible in the third dimension after its designer pulled out of MBFWA at the last minute. Luckily it’s things like this that make it impossible to hold a grudge against Goot.

Milan Fashion Week: Prada spring/summer 2013

It takes a fiendish fashion genius to turn a metallic sock into a feminist cri de coeur, but Miuccia Prada has that kind of mind. After an eyeball challenging show that once more flipped fashion on its head, she explained how she'd taken all the elements women can't normally wear "without being laughed at, and tried to make them more acceptable".

IN PICTURES: Prada spring/summer 2013

Those elements included pale pink and flowers - both plastic and appliquéd silk or wool - and Mrs Prada's claim that they're risible will come as news to millions of women who wear them, particularly perhaps in Japan, where there's a deeply embedded heritage of women looking, talking and dressing in a cutesy fashion.

Interestingly, Prada said she hadn't realised just how Japanese-inspired the collection was until it was finished - although many of the pieces, including satin kimono wraps, had been given names like Mikado. The shoes - wedge sandals worn with zip up metallic socks - were geisha like, as were the models' red lips and slept-in hair.

READ: All the gossip, news and Tweets from Milan

They were some of the most intriguingly odd-looking shoes we've seen since platforms first came into fashion. "I wanted height, but for them also to be completely flat, " she said. You can't get flatter than a sock-boot, and there were those too, complete with defined toes. They were even odder.

Together with the skinny satin skirts, the origami folded satin tops (worn with sugar almond coloured satin cycling shorts) and boxy fur coats, all of it embellished with naive flowers, it added up to a punk assault on Hello Kitty.

READ: All the stylish goings-on from Milan Fashion Week

There was plenty of black too. Of course there was, now that we've all got our heads around colours. It's precisely Prada's counter-intuitive thinking that has the fashion world at her feet (not metallic socks for her: she was wearing classic brown sandals). It works commercially too. Prada posts its end of year results next week, but for the first half of 2012, sales in Asia were up 36.5 per cent and 21 per cent in cash-strapped Italy, with shares in the company up 50 per cent.
